The singer revealed that he has been working on the idea of a mixtape for some time now and his outlook on making and listening to music has changed. although he was never interested in recording an album. He wrote:

I’ve been working on the idea of a mixtape for a while. I never really wanted to make an album, but the way I made and listened to music has changed a lot in recent years and that doesn’t always make sense on a single or an EP. I also realized that I wish my records were better suited to the soundtrack of people’s bus rides, but so far I’ve only really given you enough music to get you halfway through from Walworth Road.

I made a point of making this record really human, light and humorous in some places too so that the strangest parts of the record didn’t seem too rickety or complacent. there is so much electronic music that i love, but i never really connected to the space age, the far away land of who your graphic designer is presenting it all – so i hope that sounds a bit more personal. there are also a lot of voice notes from family members, pretty much my only contact with them during the lockdown. my dad recently showed me this long list he made of how many times we moved while growing up (my workforce is 16 btw). he is an engineer so a large part of my childhood was spent following the job. unsurprisingly, it got me thinking about family and belonging as I got older and how that relates to my music.

in my head it’s a soul record but I’m not sure that’s how people will hear it. the star of the cover is my amazing cousin leighann who introduced me to the garage jungle, d’n’b & uk at a young age. without it, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today. I love this photo of @marksrosie it reminds me of a sample that I wanted to prick with a @potterpayperhimselfinterview that roughly sums up my career – “you never know what a kind word can do for someone”. with that in mind, i want to say a big thank you to all the contributors on this record, my noble friends (you know who you are), the good people at @xlrecordings and especially my partner in crime @williamaspden (he has lots of kind words).

available to pre-order and pre-register now – link in my bio.

Hope you enjoy it, thank you for your patience and support – it means everything. xp

The singer also shared the tracklist of his next mixtape.
