Latest research from the EDM Council dissects emerging ESG data challenges and provides advice for asset owners

NEW YORK, June 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — EDM Council, a cross-industry trade association for data management and analytics, has released its Asset Owners Report, the third in its ESG data management research series. The research was conducted by the EDM Council’s ESG Data Working Group and explores the challenges asset owners face in their capital allocation role in the evolving ESG data landscape, while offering advice on how institutions can overcome these obstacles.

As societal expectations change and ESG disclosure requirements mature, responsibilities become increasingly complex for asset owners, such as corporate and public sector pension plans, sovereign wealth funds, corporate insurance, family offices and university endowments. For professional investment staff at these institutions to make sound decisions, they must have access to reliable, up-to-date data and be sufficiently familiar with the challenges that characterize the current ESG data landscape to properly weigh the various inputs.

With collaborative input from data professionals, ESG professionals and business leaders, this report aims to explain the insights that arise from addressing ESG data issues and outline best practices for managing ESG data for asset owners. The report includes three sections that cover 15 material ESG issues, describe the target state for each issue and make recommendations specifically tailored to asset owners.

“ESG as a strategic opportunity for asset owners and their stakeholders is still in its infancy. As a result, many questions remain regarding the role of data and analysis and the parties responsible for the different parts of the ESG data management effort,” said Jean Bottega, Chairman of the EDM Council. “Thanks to the diligent efforts of our growing ESG Task Force, our latest ESG report offers insights and guidance on how asset owners should address these challenges.”

EDM Council’s ESG Research Report for Asset Owners follows the first two reports published in EDM Council’s ESG Data Management Research Series. These earlier reports focused on Corporate Reporting Entities and Ratings providers and data aggregators, respectively. A subsequent article will examine the main issues affecting the entire ESG data ecosystem.
