The 2021 Latin Grammy nominations came with expected nominees and pleasant surprises, and many artists secured key names that could help them make history at these awards. Let’s take a look at five artists who could leave their mark in new ways.
Colombian pop superstar Camilo is the biggest nominee this year with 10. Among these there are five general field nominations: “Vida de Rico” for record and song of the year and her parent album “Mis Manos” for l album of the year. He also has two additional names for his work on “Amén” and “Dios Asà Lo Quiso”, both from his stepfather Ricardo Montaner. If Camilo manages to win all three general categories in a single night, he will become the first artist to do so since 2011, when Calle 13 swept the Grammys.
Peluso is nominated for Best Urban / Fusion Performance for her viral hit âNathy Peluso: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 36. “This multifaceted Argentine singer-songwriter-rapper would make history by becoming the second woman to win this category. The only other women to have been nominated are Mala Rodriguez (2013), Anitta (2016 and 2018), Shakira (2017), Beyonce (2018), Karol G (2020), and Rosalia (2018 and 2021). Of these, RosalÃa is the only one to have managed to secure a victory, in fact prevailing on the two times she has been nominated.
In addition, Peluso is also nominated for the recently inaugurated award for best rap / hip-hop song for her hit “Sana Sana”. If she wins both categories, she will be tied with Mala Rodriguez for the second highest number of victories by a woman in the urban field. The biggest female winner in the field is RosalÃa with four.
Electronic artist Arca already made Grammy history when she was nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Album for âKick I,â which is now a Latin Grammys nominee for Best Alternative Album (the Latin Grammys do not have electronic / dance categories). A win here will be even more important for the Latin LGBTQIA + community, especially non-binary and trans artists, who have been significantly under-represented at the awards. Certainly Arca has strong competition from Calle 13 Cabra (formerly known as Visitor) and the aforementioned Peluso, but its critically beloved record could cause a glorious upheaval here.
If the winner of last year’s album of the year Nathalie Lafourcade performs a repeat this year for his follow-up album âUn Canto Por México, Vol. 2 â, not only will she extend her record as the biggest winner in award history, but she will also become the first woman to win Album of the Year twice. The only other women to win the award – Shakira in 2006 (“Fijación Oral Vol. 1”) and RosalÃa in 2019 (“El Mal Querer”) – have won only once each. Lafourcade would also continue the series of women winning the first prize after RosalÃa in 2019 and herself in 2020. This would also be the case if the other nominees Nana Cymmi (“Nana, Tom, Vinicius”) or Paula arenas (“Mis Amores”) wins.
Moreover, Lafourcade would become the second artist to win two consecutive victories, after Alejandro sanz in 2001 (âEl Alma Al Aireâ) and 2002 (âMTV Unpluggedâ). On top of that, she will only be the sixth artist to win multiple albums of the year in her career, the others being Sanz, Juan Luis Guerra, and Juanes (three victories each as an artist), and Calle 13 and Luis Miguel (two wins each).
Juan Luis Guerra
Speaking of Guerra in Album of the Year, he could still make history if his EP “Private” wins the category. Guerra is already technically the biggest winner of the album of the year with four wins (his three as an artist and a fourth as a producer on Juanes’ “MTV Unplugged”), but a win here this year would break. his tie with Sanz and Juanes as the person with the most wins as an artist. âPrivateâ would also be a special victory for Guerra, as it is a re-imagining of some of his greatest classics.
Not so fast, Guerra! Juanes is too nominated for album of the year for “Origen”. If he wins, he will be the most awarded album artist of all time and will equal Guerra’s overall record of four wins.
