Saturday Night Session 054: Kidswaste reveals the five-year journey that led to second EP, “Colors of Your Heart”

Few moments are more sacred than the Saturday night respite from the daily grind of school and work. Its importance is meant to be emphasized, and thus, a dedicated “doing well at night” feature was born. Saturday night sessions are organized around energizing mixes meant to get the party started. New or old, each episode has one fundamental thing in common: they serve as the perfect backdrop for the weekend pregame.

Quentin Beauvois started his music career like many Gen Z musicians – showcasing his talents online. While many acts leverage their online following to land record deals, Beauvois’ rise was due to a different formula. Now better known to music fans as Kidswaste, the French producer began his career broadcasting on Twitch from his bedroom in 2016. He learned how to produce music on the public forum, and it helped foster connections that led to the successful launch of his career and future collaborations.

Beauvois shares, “People might not know this, but I started my music career streaming on Twitch in 2016! Music wasn’t even really allowed on the platform. I used to participate in hour-long challenges with friends, which really helped me improve quickly. He continues: “That’s actually how I met Siarate with whom I collaborated on “Back Then”. The song itself was made around this time, although it took a little over an hour.

Although he started producing music in 2016, Beauvois leaned in and quickly focused on the fun business. In 2017, he released his debut single “Underwater”, which catapulted him into prominence in the indie dance music scene. He then produced and released a full EP, titled Missed, that same year. The reception given to the EP has been extremely positive and its momentum has remained strong.

It’s now five years later, and the artist has released his second EP, Colors of your heart, now available on Counter Records. The entire work gives the listener a glimpse into their own heart and the journey they have traveled, both personally and professionally. Beauvois shares that during the time he wrote the EP, he was in different headspaces and had varying inspirations throughout. This means that each song represents a different moment for him. For his Kidswaste project as a whole, a new era is dawning, affectionately dubbed the “Kiddy” era, which features a more energetic and refined sound and style that reflects the maturing process he has gone through over the years. .

Despite the fact that the songs on the EP have been produced at different times over the past five years, Colors of your heart is a dreamy collection of flowing singles that blend seamlessly despite stylistic differences.

He comments on this, sharing, “It was the project right after Missed, which I’ve been working on since 2017. Some songs, like “Back Then” and “Waves”, were composed around this time almost 3-6 years ago. It shows the evolution from my old music to what feels more like my new self. I wrote ‘Runner’ in 2021, and ‘Home’ in January 2022. The goal was to keep consistency with the Kiddy! era over the years.

Highlights from the EP include “Let Go”, which is an independent alt single that taps into rock with electronic production as a supporting element. In stark contrast, “Waves” leans into the indie electronic genre, putting production at the forefront of the song. “Time is Mine” with Olivia Reid expands Kidswaste’s sound, with sultry vocals rounding out the upbeat single that infuses disco elements into the heart-pounding background.

Olivia Reid, Lizzy Land and Siarate are star collaborators on the EP, tying together the eight tracks in a brilliant blend of Beauvois’ style and sound with hard-hitting collaborators pushing the boundaries of what we’ve come to know and expect from the producer. The artist shares that he wrote over 100 songs for the project before deciding on the final group of songs he felt he resonated with the most.

Beauvois will be back on the road for his first headlining North American tour in honor of the release of the EP. Titled Colors of Your Heart Tour, it will perform in markets including Brooklyn, Denver, Chicago and more. He comments on what to expect from his upcoming tour and how he feels about being back on the road.

He shares, “I’m nervous, but it’s exciting! This is my first headlining tour in all of America, and I’m incredibly excited. I try to breathe new life into my shows with more energy, remixes of old songs and live edits! Getting back on the road is a bit scary but it will be fine, especially with Tails joining the adventure!

In honor of the Colors of your heart full EP release, the artist crafted an exclusive one-hour Saturday Night Session mix for listeners.

When asked what fans can expect from the mix, he shares, “It’s a showcase of some songs from the project mixed with some songs I like! It’s not super representative of the live show as I try to keep most of it as a surprise, but there are some fun ids! I hope you enjoy!”

This is your second EP. What was the difference for you with Colors of your heart compared to Missed?

It was the project right after “Spleen”, which I’ve been working on since 2017. Some songs, like “Back Then” and “Waves”, were made around this time almost 3-6 years ago. It shows the evolution from my old music to what feels more like my new self. I wrote “Runner” in 2021, and “Home” in January 2022. The goal was to keep consistency with the Kiddy! era over the years.

Is there a track that stands out personally from the EP?

My favorite is “Runner” because it tells the most recent story of my life. While the other songs might be a bit more elusive or general, this one is more about what I’ve been through for the past few years. In addition to that, the production corresponds to my vision of the continuation of this project.

Your sound has certainly evolved over the years. Is your evolution fair as an artist? Or do you think that your sonic evolution is also linked to your personal evolution?

I think it’s a bit of both because the way I’ve worked with music over the years has varied a lot. I started integrating material into my workflow and focused on improving my production. Especially the sound design. It’s not perfect yet, but now I can vary my style, which allows more creative freedom. All in all though, I must have written around 100 songs for this project, but only kept the ones I resonated with.

A headlining tour is a big deal. Can you tell us about the tour?

I’m nervous, but it’s exciting! This is my first headlining tour in all of America, and I’m incredibly excited. I try to breathe new life into my shows with more energy, remixes of old songs and live edits! Getting back on the road is a bit scary but it will be fine, especially with Tails there to join the adventure!

What’s one thing about you as a person outside of your music career that fans don’t know about?

People might not know this, but I started my music career streaming on Twitch in 2016! Music wasn’t even really allowed on the platform. I used to participate in hour-long challenges with friends, which really helped me improve quickly. This is also how I met Siarate with whom I collaborated on “Back Then”. The song itself was made around this time, although it took a little over an hour.

What kind of Saturday night will your Saturday night session prepare listeners for?

It’s a showcase of some songs from the project mixed with some songs that I like! It’s not super representative of the live show as I try to keep most of it as a surprise, but there are some fun ids! I hope you enjoy !
